A good poultry farming in Nigeria

Poultry Farming in Nigeria is probably one of the most lucrative farming businesses you can do in Nigeria especially when it is set up and managed properly. The farmers we currently have are not producing enough poultry and will not be enough even in the next ten years! This aspect of livestock farming presents one of the finest opportunities for entrepreneurs to make good money within the shortest period possible. This is made possible by the quick maturity of chicken. Click Here to get a comprehensive eBook on Poultry Farming in Nigeria.

With over 160 Million consumers in the country who buys poultry products on a daily basis, the market is always here waiting to be tapped. The demand for eggs is so high that people go about every day looking for where to buy eggs for supply.

So, how exactly can anyone who wishes to start poultry farming in Nigeria be able to go about it and come out very profitable? This article will cover a lot of ground, and it is written based on personal experience and continually updated to make sure the information here is as accurate as possible at all times.

SEE ALSO: How to start a small-scale poultry farm

This very post will take a more critical look at the business and how entrepreneurs who are interested in this business in Nigeria could start easily without wasting much time and resources.

Anyone can engage in the poultry farming business, it doesn’t matter their educational or financial background. You can start at any level and grow as big as you want with time. The most important thing is that you are interested in starting somewhere.

This article will focus on how to start small and grow big which I think will interest anyone with limited financial capacity who wants to start small without involving many risks.

One of the factors that make the poultry farming business ideal is that chickens grow very fast. Unlike goats which take 2 to 3 years to mature, a chicken can be ready for the market within 28 weeks from birth. That is why it is considered an ideal business for loan takers who may invest the loan and within 30 to 40 weeks, they may start paying back through the money realized from sales. That is if everything goes well as planned.

Profit Potential in Poultry Farming Business

      1. Chicken Reproduce Fast

The average healthy Layer lays eggs almost every day or at least 4 times in a week. Some Breeds can lay as many as 325 eggs in a year and take 21 days to hatch. This means that technically a Layer is capable of producing another chicken twice in three days.

So, if you have 500 healthy layers of good breeds (such as California white) they are capable of reproducing a whooping 12,000 chicks within 40 days!

SEE ALSO: How To Start a Poultry Farm Business In Nigeria

      2. Chicken Grows Very Fast

Within 21 days, the egg is hatched and within 28 weeks, they are ready for the market. That means a farmer may start making his money in just 34 weeks after successfully setting up his farm and whatever returns he makes could be doubled in a year based on this calculation.

      3. Chicken Sells at a Very Good Price

A fully grown healthy chicken sells between 2,000 to 2,500 naira in Nigeria. Therefore, if you produce 12,000 chickens on your farm, you will be making N24 million by the time they are completely sold.

      4. Egg market is Large too – Apart from the chicken, the egg is another money of its own. A crate of eggs sells for N500 – N550 for smaller eggs and N600 – N650 for bigger ones. Each crate contains 30 eggs. Therefore, if you have 500 layers that produce 12,000 pullets in a month and decide to sell all, you will be making N200,000 to N260,000 monthly.

As you can see, the profit in poultry farming in Nigeria is mouth-watering and the turnover time is fantastic. The big question now is how to get this business started.

What Your Poultry Business Plan Should Look Like

      Poultry Farming in Nigeria

      Medium-scale poultry farm in Nigeria

Draw out your effective business plan. A poultry business plan is like a road map leading you to where you are going in your business. It will help you know where you are at any point in time. Hence your business plan should include:

      1. Decide on the Type of Poultry Bird

Here you choose Chickens (Layers and Broilers). We choose chicken because that’s what this article focuses on. Other types of birds are good for livestock business too,  such as Goose, Duck, Turkey, etc.

      2. Write Down your Area of Interest

You can’t just be in all aspects of poultry farming in Nigeria. You have to choose your area of interest where you would like to concentrate your business. This will ensure a high level of focus and professionalism. If you can do two areas, no problem. Below are some of the major Niches in Poultry Farming in Nigeria or elsewhere.

For more discussion please call/WhatsApp 07036378686 an expert to get started TODAY.

      • Layers Breeding which is egg production by Layers
      • Broiler breeding which refers to the chicken meat production by Broilers
      • Hatchery which has to do with breeding chickens to hatch new chicks
      • Poultry feed which produces feeds for other poultry farmers

You may choose to Breed Layers and Broilers at a time or one of them. Hatchery is better done independently just like feed production. So, you choose your area of focus

      3. Sort out the Location

This has a direct effect on your startup cost. A location in a very remote rural area will cost far less than one close to an urban area. A remote rural area with a good road is the ideal location as you will be free from regulatory agencies and drive down the cost of labor too.

As a person new to the Livestock business, you don’t want to invest all your capital into buying lands in an urban area that may turn out not being used. Government policy is against setting up poultry farms near residential/urban areas for health implications.

      4. Secure your Poultry Farm Starting Capital

With the location in mind, you now have a clearer idea of the capital required of you. Write down your detailed capital and investment requirements for your poultry farming in Nigeria venture and set out to source for it.

Like every other farming project, the bigger you plan to start, the more investment is required. You need to decide on the level of capital investment you are willing to commit to this business before starting.

      1. Buy Poultry Farmland

As we said earlier, look for land in a remote location but make sure it’s not too far from the city. A place like Ijebu Ode, Remo Area, Imota in Ikorodu. These places are perfect if you are in Lagos. Other places like Oshogbo after Ibadan isn’t too far too from the major city like Ibadan.

You can get acres of land there for a low price, the cost of land in most cases is determined by the sellers. But we may suggest a price during commenting. So drop your comments below and let’s get the discussion going.

The quantity you give depends on the age of the chicken

But the common rule is to give what they can exhaust

or 1.5 lbs per bird per week

Hello Darlington. Iam looking to buy 3 plots of land in Ibeju Lekki lagos to use for poultry farming. Iam looking to loan about 5 million from the bank. Will my dream come true with this amount of money? Will lagos state government allow poultry farm in this area?
Would you recommend I go for poultry education when I return? How do I start? It is a thing of passion, not just to make money. Iam looking to build and live in 3bedroom bungalow on this same land and then do my poetry farm on the remaining.

Pls sir do you know any. Cooperative poultry farm in Abuja that I. Can go for training?..Thank you

      • Darlinton Omeh August 22, 2013

Chickens at different stages of development require different feed.

        1. Day-old chicks through 8 weeks old require starter feed containing 20% protein. Starter feed contains the highest percentage of protein a layer will ever consume, which makes sense given their astronomical rate of growth in the first few months of life.

        2. Layer feed should never be fed to chickens younger than 18 weeks

        3. Give Layer feed from 18 months

        4. Layer feed contains 16-18% protein plus added calcium, which is necessary for eggshell production

Thank you for this great article. Pls where can we get large farm land in anywhere near lagos, any suggestion or idea?

        • Darlinton Omeh August 29, 2013

You can get large farmland at cheap price in many part of Ogun State that is if you are in Lagos. But if you are in other states, just go to the nearby rural area, you will get large farmland to buy or let at cheap rate.

        • Daniel Ogbebor October 10, 2013

Thank you for the inspiring article; is the risk in the business avoidable, because my friend had losses in the business, and so had to quit the bizs. Please can you give me your number,so I can call you for advice.

          • Darlinton Omeh December 10, 2013

Poor management is the reason many people experience loss in their business. Poultry is one of the most profitable business but you need to manage it well if you want to attain huge gain. For your chicken to do well, it need proper feeding, proper disease control, good vaccination, and proper housing.

Again, many people finds it so hard to invest in knowledge; instead they prefer to go into the business with little or no knowledge. How could someone going into huge business as poultry find it difficult to buy Poultry eBooks or get training? When you find it so hard to invest in knowledge, then expect losses.

            • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

My advice is before going to that huge land of yours that’s too for from where you get their vaccines to buy and you have no experience start in a cooperative poultry farm. So many experience good farmers, having the same vision and goal as you do will help you out, then after you have gotten all the experience needed you can then go to your huge land and start it in a big way. If you do this tell me how will you fail in it?

There are cooperative farms in Lagos, Oyo and Ogun State.

              God Bless You

Thanx a lot Mr. Darlinton for your impressive post. i'm really looking forward for your robust ebook. My question are three.
        1. how much will it cost to build a standard poultry like the one shown on your post(for both broilers and layers). also, what quantity of land will u advice(e.g. 1hectare or 2hectare or more)
        2. since we are novice to these business, how do we know the feed combinations for the poultry animals and feed mixing processes.
        3. do you know one or two consultants by which you could refer us to? The one that will guide us as we start from d root.
        Thanx

        • Darlinton Omeh September 19, 2013

Thank you Augustina, The poultry farm you see on the picture is a big poultry farm house capable of housing thousands of chicken. If you are eying that size, your budget should start from N10,000,000.

There are professional consultants, some of whom may show up here as the time goes on. This article was once full of comments from professional consultants and experienced poultry farmers. Unfortunately we lost those comments due to technical movement.

Please,Is it advisable to start a poultry farm very close to one's residence even in a rural area?

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

You can’t do it on your own you without experience so you don’t loose money.
So many people kept complaining they went into it and their birds all died, because is not the kind of business you go into hoping to learn in the process. You’ll loose your capital and get discourage.
          Is a very lucrative business.
Irrespective of the capital you have start in a cooperative poultry farm.
There are in Lagos, Oyo and Ogun State.

      • Anonymous September 29, 2013

        Hi Darlington,
What an impressive information you are dishing out here. Loving you for this.
I had a sting on poultry farming (very small scale) with a pal many years ago. The land and setting are still there wasting away bcos I moved out of the country and the guy got preoccupied with his normal profession…so we abandoned the project after splitting the "fruits of our labor/input" if you know what i mean.
Recently I have been thinking of going back to it this time for good likewise my pal. He was bequeathed with the farmland.
My question is ….Is it advisable to go into poultry, piggery, fishery at the same time? Bearing in mind that we haven't got all the capital in this world for a big project. What i am thinking of, is that a little bit of this and a little bit of that, we can both pull it together and then grow bigger.
        Awaiting your response.

        "The Don"

        • Darlinton Omeh October 1, 2013

Going into Poultry, Piggery, and Fishery at the same time requires a lot of money and management no matter how small. My advice is that you should start one at a time and then add the others later.

      • Anonymous September 29, 2013

please what drugs do you require to raise chickens(layers and broilers) succesfully

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

There are lots of drug to be applied at different stages of their growth.
For Broiler Anticoccy and CRD ( Cronic Respiratory Disease) then Lasota and gomboro vaccines are very important.

For layers there is more than for Broilers

        • Darlinton Omeh October 1, 2013

Evans, I think reading through the post will give you idea of what to do.

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

I’ll advice you start by rearing 300 Broilers.
If you’re discipline, focus and determined, you will keep increasing the capital until you can bust of 1000 laying birds.

          God bless you

How many broilers can a farmer raise comfortably in a plot of land

      • Anonymous October 3, 2013

i intend going into poultry business layers precisely pls hw far can i go with #2.5m and what type of chicken will be good

      • Darlinton Omeh October 3, 2013

I think the article have address this question

      • Anonymous October 3, 2013

of all the online resources about poultry farming, yours seem to me the best. it is quite simple and adresses the issues clearly. i have about 150k and a piece of land at my backyard. i want to start a layer farm. how do you think i should go about it. plus please can i have your phone number so that we can talk better. o'funmi

      • Anonymous October 3, 2013

I started a poultry farm with a friend and currently have about 2000 chickens. They have started laying but we suddenly experience a deep in production. How do u mitigate against theft on the farm because I suspect the staff?

        • Darlinton Omeh October 3, 2013

You need to step up your security before people run down your investment. It is always better if you can manage your poultry yourself instead of entrusting it completely into the hands of workers.

But have you made sure snake is not having access to the pen? Snake could cause serious damage if they gain entry. If possible, fence the farm and try to keep it clean at all times and pay closer attention to your staffs.

@o'funmi, if you are starting at your backyard you need to start small and N150K is more than enough to start small. With time you can move elsewhere when your poultry starts getting bigger and the smell starts disturbing.

        • Anonymous October 6, 2013

Even here in Europe ,I work almost everyday untill late in the farm expcially during hatchery seasons.Mind you this in mind that nobody will do better and does not steal in your farm>You just have to find time and be there otherwise the farm will colapse soon even if it is your brother or sister working there.I call this the place of event you have to be there.

i suggest u install cctv in ur farm ….itll cost less than 90,000 naira….

I am a poultry and hatchery owner in Ukraine.I raise parent livestocks of geese and ducks with hatchery capacity of 300,000 for the past 16 years. The know how is there. Please do you think this area could be of success in Nigeria ?

        • Darlinton Omeh October 4, 2013

There is no market for geese and duck in Nigeria in my own opinion. Nigerians aren't used to eating duck that much though some do but are in the minority compared to chicken consumers. You can invest in quail and chicken that's where the market is in Nigeria.

However, great possibilities may exist in there. Who knows if well introduced it may gain market appeal. If you want we could carryout the market research for you?

        • Anonymous October 6, 2013

Thank you so much for your quick and honest reply. Please could you let me know how much the market research will cost?Where can one buy future parents for one to satisfy his hatchery need of fertilized eggs in Nigeria.Thank you in advance for you answers

        • Darlinton Omeh October 7, 2013

$2,000 Only for detailed market research that will cover all the thirty six states of the federation and Abuja.

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

The reason why you went through foes challenge is because you don’t have the knowledge. Is not the kind you do without having a good knowledge about it.

Go to a cooperative poultry farm lease a space and start operating, you won’t incure any lost even bedflu can be prevented with good knowledge about poultry.

          God bless you

      • ede October 5, 2013

Good day ur article is very informative, I started a poultry at my backyard dis year. Pls can u explain d diff housing types better or give me a link where I could research about them on the net. Also, I wish to deal witth layers next year, which housing is best for them? Wil be expecting your reply, thanks

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

From a day old they need a brooding house.
When they are between 8 to 16 weeks you can move them to a cage pen house they will remain there until the become old layers and sold out.

          God Bless You

hello sir, my dad has a free space and i want to go into agric but my question is , what are the risk faced by broilers or turkey. How can i get mixed food for them, i need a formular and I also need to some trainings.

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

I advice you focus on all the antibiotics and vaccines that they need to be given because if properly applied all the risk will be under your control.
There are lots of finish feed producers for poultry in Nigeria.

          God Bless You

      • Anonymous October 7, 2013

        Hello Sir,
Is there any training that want need to undergo before starting a poultry business? I will also like to have your contact detail.

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

You should get trained before going into Poultry farming.
The best place to be trained is in a poultry farm.
I advice you start your poultry in a poultry farm cooperative that way you can get trained while in the business.
          God bless you

        Sir,
Thank you for your security advise, will look into it straight away. Can you kindly link me up with the Ukrainian farmer looking to rear ducks in Nigeria. I believe there is enough market for duck rearing in Nigeria with the foreigners inflow into the country and you will be surprise how much people know about duck meat though not as much as chicken and quail.

I will get you in touch when I am due to come over. Thanks for you reply what about the second part of the question?

      • Anonymous October 11, 2013

I am student and I have passion for poultry,I have what it takes to prepare and mix poultry feeds using Pearson square method or computer method, I am saving in order to acquire a plot of land in my area, and my questions are:
        1. Like how much will I need to construct the poultry if am planning deep litter system / battery cage system.
2.How much will the cage cost me and how long can they last before deterioration sets in?
        3. How much will it cost me to feed 100 day old chicks to 18 weeks old
4 Where can I get poultry vaccines and drugs in Osun state?

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

          Answers:
          1. Deep litter / Battery cage system can only be determined by the number of birds you want to cage.
          2. A brand new locally made cage that’s made by welders in a cooperative poultry farm at Ojo Lagos cost N250,000 and can last for over 10 yrs, while a second handed one cost from N140,000 to 160,000 and a unit can take up to 360 birds conviniently.
          3. A rough estimate will be over N500,000.
          4. I’ve no idea I only know about where you can get it in Lagos.

          God Bless You

      • Anonymous October 18, 2013

Goodday sir, what is the best way to market a day old chick, cos i am about to go to hatchery part of poultry farming. thanks as i wait your quick response.

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

That’s a very sensitive part of poultry farming because alot of poultry farmers in the cooperative poultry farm where I’m and other big farms i know prefer buying their day old chicks from big hatcheries e.g CHI, Aptech, Obasanjo and Amo Byng hatcheries so I think breaking into the market to get poultry farmers to buy from your hatchery will be a little bit difficult so I advice you start by hatching the birds for your poultry farm then if they are doing well make your results known through marketers then you can build a brand and become a big hatchery too.

      • Anonymous October 21, 2013

Mr.Darlington, ls kindly advice when layers will start dropping||?

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

Layers start dropping from 18 weeks but not all will be dropping, so they won’t be able to feed themselves from the sales of Eggs . Therefore, you’ll still be investing till they get to 22 weeks then all would have been dropping, at this time, they will be able to feed themselves and start making for you.

does means that boiler don't laid eggs at all, if they dont how do they reproduce

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

Broilers don’t lay eggs. At the hatchery there are parent stock that lay the eggs that are been hatched to produce Broilers.

You are God sent to me,your posts were sited at the right time.I currently have a Nursery/primary sch,a supermarket in a university campus and a shop where my wife and i are selling food stuff and ingredient. All these businesses are doing fine but require a lot money to be pumped into it.Im currently thinking of quieting my job for all these are too much for my wife alone since im not currently in that city but in Nigeria, need your candid advice

        • Darlinton Omeh December 16, 2013

Sorry I am replying this very late, I just saw it now as I was going through the comments. My candid advice is that you should resign as soon as possible to assist your wife run those businesses. In my own opinion, those businesses you mentioed that your wife is into could be much more rewarding financially if you and your wife could combine efforts and run it more effectively. So why labor elsewhere when you already have companies of your own?

You this business is very serious and sensitive, you do not want to do something that will affect your business negatively.

Rearing 1,080 birds at my backyard may pose enviromental problems, how may I control this?

              Can this size be profitable?

              • Emmanuel Odafe Ejiyere January 30, 2018

I don’t advice people to buy point of lay birds because the person that raised them may not have apply all the necessary vaccines they need which may affect them at their latter stage.

      • Prince Nwosu November 11, 2013

Greetings mr Darlinton. Thank you for the vital life changing informations. I came accross your blug from google search. Pls i have 3 important questions before i finally decide for this investment and purchase the e-book.

        1. I stay in a rented apartment at ojodu berger in lagos and will be starting with N500,000. I will need to buy a land in the remote area of ikorodu or ogun state as mentioned in the blug. I beleive the land will require fensing, pen house and the chicken cages in addition to other items mentioned. Can N500k do all these as i know land and fensing alone can gulp up to 400k. Or can one do without the fensing in the remote area in the bush?

        2. Secondly, my wife will manage the place and be coming from ojodu and return in the evening. Are we going to require a night guard?

I need to be sure N500k can carry before i venture. Thank you for your anticipated response.

        Jerry Prince.

        • Darlinton Omeh November 12, 2013

N500,000 will go a long way to establish your farm especially if you can get your land for cheap price (less than N100,000) in that case, the money you have will be more than enough for a medium farm.

However, the money wouldn't be enough if you add fencing except you are fencing with local material. Yes, you can do without fencing but fencing make your farm more secure.

If your wife is to return home after the day work, you need to hire a trusted person or a guard who will be there to guide your poultry else they will use your chicken and do pepper soup.

      • Joseph Ogunleye November 12, 2013

        • Darlinton Omeh November 15, 2013

Use saw dust, spray it on your pens floor and regularly change it. You can also use drop collector board if your poultry is not big. If you change your saw dust regularly, the smell will minimize.

      • Adam Obute November 15, 2013

All depends on what you want. If it is a semi/free range, then N500,000 can do. The eBook is PDF (Portable File Format) you can print it OUT and make a hard copy of it if you like

        • Darlinton Omeh December 5, 2013

Yes, there are descriptions for both small and large poultry farm houses. It contains much more than you can imagine

      • Anonymous December 9, 2013

Thank you for this information…I just want to know what members of staff I would need for a poultry farm of 1000-1500 POL chickens as a beginner in this business. Also I would like to know how many persons will be required in each department…

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

Two poultry attendance is ok from brooding to caging stage, you need to have a good provision of water, because water is one of the most important aspect of poultry farming.
          GOD BLESS YOU

@ MR Darlington please how can i contact you?i have a questionnaire i will like you to help me answer

      • joladunni@gmail.com December 12, 2013

Your publications are good and helpful. My chickens started to die. dey, all of a sudden, become weak and walk as if dey want to fall like some1 without stamina. I noticed dat their poops are green and some are watery brown and strong gray/ash color. some cough as thou dey ave catarrh. Thou dey were separated but in order not to loose dem all I have killed d healthy ones. Can you talk on Birds' Diseases?

        • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

The reasons why you experienced such is because not all the necessary antibiotics and vaccines was given to your birds.
You can’t practice poultry farming own your own after buying the ebook look for a cooperative poultry farm in your state and start ftomorrow there.
Your experience will discourage others from going into Poultry farming.
          God Bless You

i already have 4 plot of land, i have been fixing to set up a poultry for some years now.
not have 1 million naira,i am still sceptical about the number of birds to start with,..
because i would like to know an approximate amount needed to feed 1 chicken up to 28 weeks.

        • Darlinton Omeh December 13, 2013

It takes N700 – N800 worth of feeds approximately to rear a chicken from day old to maturity. Sometines everything put together.

          • Emma Odafe July 7, 2017

Now it will cost about 1200 to 1300 to feed a pullet to 22 weeks when they finally start feeding themselves.

            God bless you

My challenge is where i have Land in Port Harcourt is where people are staying,a plot of land surrounding by other people but its fenced and am not ready to stay there as the place is not develop to my taste for me to stay there what do i do. Another question is the eBook that is 8000 is it for everything there or is it on each one? Thanks as i get a reply from you. Ukeme

        • Darlinton Omeh January 5, 2014

You can't setup your poultry in a residential area no matter how it is except you want to rear in a small scale or free range farming system. So, you need to look for other things you can do with the land.

The price you see for the eBook on poultry is a new year discount to is valid only today before 12 midnight, each of the eBooks has it's price written under it.

Dear Sir, How many new, full-time (or equivalent) staff will be employed in setting-up a Large scale or Intensive poultry farming that requires high level of sophistication and more careful planning and professionalism, using advance Livestock farming techniques for the first 12 months

        • Darlinton Omeh January 29, 2014

That's what you need to plan carefully about by preparing a robust business plan, the eBook will assist you greatly in doing that. However, for the poultry of that magnitude, you will need minimum of 20 internal full time personnel

Thanks Stella

        • Darlinton Omeh February 4, 2014

Since you are a girl, you need to start small with 50 birds or less and see how it goes then you can expand by committing more resources. I am not familiar with areas in and around Abuja, so you ask people who knows the area to help you out

      • JOHN ONWUEMEZIA February 5, 2014

Hi, i have just read most of your blog and will like to say it has given me a lot to think about starting a poultry farm which although i have been interested in.
I really want to come back home to start something like this after spending a long time overseas.
However, I dont have the experience as such but have worked for a large company here who deal with poultry farming materials.
It is very difficult to get good advice from fellow Nigerians but it seems things are changing for the best.
Setting up a poultry farm of about 2000 birds to start with is my ideal number but i could be wrong and that is why I need your help and experience advice to start with.
I know that it may cost me for your advice but its better for it to cost me less than to lose a lot.
My name is John please get back to me if possible.
        Many Thanks.

        • Darlinton Omeh February 5, 2014

John, coming back home to invest is a very good idea because no place like your father land, it's something we have been encouraging through this website and we are happy you guys are responding to it. One thing I certainly will not do is getting back to people who dropped their emails here. If you receive any email, be sure that it's not from me. Understand that fraudsters are always on the lookout for peoples' contacts to see the possibility of defrauding them through it. I don't want anyone to be a victim that's why I frown at adding email or phone number to a comment. So, I'd like you to make another comment without your email address because I will soon delete this one. Thank you!

But the problem now is that after six months they haven't dropped an egg as return for my investment .the question is could they all be sterile?

        • Emmanuel Odafe Ejiyere July 7, 2017

You see one of the reasons why I said you can’t practice poultry without the personal experience except in a cooperative poultry farm where there are lots of experience people who will put you through.
          God bless you

      • Olowolayemo April 24, 2014

Hi, I am a lover of keeping chickens from when i was a child. I have practiced cross breeding and mass productions in the local chicken breeding when I was small. Because of school and conditions I left it. I am retired now I want to go into poultry farming. A friend advised that I start with 'Point of Lay' so that I can grab the process which I have left a long time ago. How can you advice me. I have read a lot and I know that the business is lucrative now in Nigeria.

        • Darlinton Omeh April 24, 2014

"Point of Lay" or "Day Old", anyone one you choose is very good. However, Point of Lay is good if you are breeding for egg production, if you intends to breed for the meet, you have to go for day old

i need help please. i have a poultry farm and my layers have refused to start laying. this is the 7th month now. I went for training and did everything according to experience. what could be wrong? professionals are ssaying that it was the place i bought the chicks. they said the chicks have a bad history. how true is this?

        • Emmanuel Odafe Ejiyere July 7, 2017

I’ll advice you buy your chicks from the following hatcheries CHI, APTECH, OBASANJO and AMO BYNG.
It’s rare to have such complain if you got your birds from any of the above hatcheries.
Some agents supply birds that have been abandoned by some of this hatcheries and supply you.

          God bless you

Mr. Darlington nice one but check again Agric. fowl is table ready in 8 weeks not 28 as stated in your article

People don’t like to buy an 8 weeks Broiler because the meet isn’t strong enough but that’s what eateries prefer. In other words, Mr Darlington is not wrong, it all depends on the type of fowl in question. Am sure he is referring to Cockerells which take longer time to be table ready for the general public.
          God bless you

Thanks for your advices and encouragements. I intend to start up a poultry farm in a small scale with 100 birds. I have been rearing broilers each festive season and they turn out good. I've gone through your posts and got the name and account number to pay in for the eBook. Now my question are : –

        1. What kind of breed is best for egg production mainly?
        2. How do l construct a pen house with all the necessary requirements (water, feed, etc) or do you have anyone l can contact?
        3. In cases of power failure, any alternative?
        4. How long does it take for the bird to start laying?
5 Starting with 100 birds, how much do l need to set aside just in case. cos l intend to resign from my job?

        Thanks.

      • anonymous March 31, 2016

        Hello Sir,

I came across your post and I am enlightened. Can i start this poultry farm on a water logged land as i am already into fish farming and i have extra land. Can i get cages or must it be like the picture shown above even if its on a smaller scale? If i have to use cages, how many chicks can fit a cage and conveniently grow in without space constraints in the cage. Also, how do we get consumers or marketers to come buy or do we just enter into any market to introduce yourself. I want to go into layers and eggs sales.

        Anonymous

        • Akinyele May 23, 2018

The quantity of the chicks you are looking up to,will determine the size of your cage.
          As a starter,you market yourself.

This is the best informative business site have visited. Am so happy to commend you on the great Job you are doing, May God bless you.
Am an Estate Surveyor and Valuer, am also into poultry farming and about to go into fully automated poultry farming. Your writeup has been helpful and will like to make my little contribution in the area of land leasing and acquisition.
It is advisable to get land in rural area to prevent future disturbance. There are also area that are purposely designated by government for farming in rural area with provision of necessary equipment and facilities. One can get farmland allocation directly from Ogun state government and will be granted when all requirement are met. For Arable farming, 10 hectares while pastoral farming have lesser size of land. I once applied but missed out as I did not meet up with the requirement. Fortunately for me I got one for sale outside government allocation but around same location and enjoy government facilities.
I reside in Lagos and have my poultry farm at Owode, Ogun state. I visit the farm 5 days in a week despite having staffs residing on the farm. If well plan, it is a good and profitable business venture.

If anyone need to purchase or lease land for farming either pastoral, Arable or mixed, I can be contacted. I have 300 Acres of land off Owode- Idiroko road, just 20 mins drive away from Canaan Land(Winners Chapel) Ota and 5 mins drive away from Military cantonment, Owode. We sell N300k/acre & N500k/acre, these are government approved farm land, not for estate development. For lease, the rent will be determined by the size, purpose and duration of the lease.
        I can be contacted.
        Thanks and God bless.

Great post, very insightful. I have bookmarked this site for future reference purpose.

Get this standard poultry farming business plan with 3 years financial analysis-cashflow, marketing, balance sheet, income statement. Address:  Number 3, Okele Street, Ogbogbo, Ijebu North East, Ogun State, Nigeria.

This standard poultry farming business plan is developed to help smart poultry entrepreneurs that can not afford high fee for consultant  develop poultry business plan The Nigerian poultry industry is estimated at ₦80 billion ($600 million) and is comprised of approximately 165 million birds, which produced 650,000 MT of eggs and 290,000 MT of poultry meat in 2013 and in 2016, it has grown tremendously. From a market size perspective, Nigeria’s egg production is the largest in Africa (South Africa is the next largest at 540,000 MT of eggs) and it has the 2nd largest chicken population after South Africa’s 200 million birds.

It is a fact that Nigeria presently consumes  1.5 million MT of frozen chicken annually. As at 2014, the locally produced chicken was estimated at 300,000MT, a capacity utilisation o 46 percent in an industry that currently boasts  a 650,000MT installed capacity. . In the same year, 1.2 million MT of frozen chicken, valued at N660 billion (equivalent to $2.75 billion) was Imported. Looking at this statistics, it shows that the demand for poultry product is so high and we are unable to meet demand locally. With the ban on importation of poultry products into the country, a huge market has been created for smart
        entrepreneurs to tap from this.

Due to popular demand from young and aspiring entrepreneurs that have been seriously looking for funds and were asked to submit a business plan, I have decided to create a standard poultry farmin business plan that covers rearing and selling of chickens, eggs and poultry waste/fertilizer. The poultry business plan that can be presented to any investor, bank loan or for grant comes
        with the following:

The complete poultry farming business plan is in hard copy and  Words Doc format and also the financial analysis in excel so that you can edit it to suit your taste.
