Diabetes is a medical condition that is characterized by the inability of the body to produce the hormone insulin or respond to it; this can lead to an impaired metabolism of carbohydrate, high levels of sugar in the blood and other health complications.

The levels of sugar are regulated by insulin which is produced by the pancreas; when there is an increase of sugar in the body, the pancreas releases insulin to normalize it and enhance the absorption of glucose by the cells of the body. When someone has diabetes; it is either the pancreas is unable to produce sufficient insulin or the cells cannot respond to insulin.

Types of Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes. They are type I and type II. Type one diabetes also called insulin-dependent or juvenile onset diabetes is characterized by low or insufficient amount of insulin, in this case the pancreas is affected and cannot carry out its functions while type II is also known as non-insulin dependent or adult onset diabetes is characterized by the inability of the cells to respond to or absorb insulin.

Some of the causes and risk factors for diabetes are obesity, high blood pressure, genetics and family history, an inactive lifestyle, high levels of bad cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein cholesterol), high levels of triglycerides and low levels of good cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol), aging, high intake of refined sugar, sugary drinks and foods, bad and unhealthy diet.
