Typhoid fever is a severe disease that needs immediate treatment; it is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi; it can also be caused by the bacterium, Salmonella paratyphi.

The bacteria can be found in contaminated water, contaminated foods, and human carriers; some people are carriers of the bacterium and they transfer them through their stools. When someone comes in contact the stool of a carrier, the person can become infected with typhoid.

That is why regular washing of hands is important especially after using the toilet and before preparing meals. Also drinking water should be boiled properly before drinking and avoid patronizing public foods that you are not sure of the type of water used and how it was prepared.

Also wash fruits and vegetables properly before eating; it is safer to peel the skin of such fruit before eating. Every year, 21 million people worldwide are affected by this disease and over 200, 000 people die yearly from typhoid fever with the developing countries having the highest death rate.

The symptoms of typhoid fever are headaches, diarrhea, poor appetite, lethargy, vomiting, nausea, body pains and aches, fatigue, high body temperature and others. There are antibiotics available for the treatment of typhoid fever but there are also effective natural cures for it and we will be looking at some of them in this post.

Effective Natural Cures for Typhoid Fever

  1. Homemade ORS

This is a way to replace lost fluid and electrolytes lost through vomiting and diarrhea; it also prevents dehydration which can worsen the situation and it reduces the duration and severity of the illness and hastens recovery. ORS is known as oral rehydration salt and you can do yours at home if you don’t have access to a pharmacy.

To make your own ORS solution; mix half teaspoon of table salt and 6 small spoons of sugar in 4 cups of clean drinking water, take this several times daily until you see improvement and recover.

  1. Garlic

Garlic has powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which help in destroying the bacterium salmonella and inhibiting its activities. It hastens recovery, boosts the immune system and eliminates pathogens, wastes, and toxins from the body.

Eat fresh garlic cloves daily; do this mostly on an empty stomach; that is when you wake up in the morning and also take it during the day. You can add crushed garlic to a cup of milk and add 4 cups of water. Boil the solution till it reduces to ¼ of its original volume and take this solution thrice daily.

Do this daily till you recover; don’t give garlic to little children and pregnant women should not take excess garlic.

  1. Apple cider vinegar

This liquid is generally called the “miracle liquid” because it is a home remedy for most diseases; it fights fatigue by energizing the body and it regulates the temperature of the body by drawing heat out of the skin.

It is also rich in minerals which help to replace lost electrolytes; it has phytochemicals and vitamins which boost the immune system and help the body overcome.

Add a teaspoon of raw and unfiltered ACV to a glass of water; you can add honey for taste, drink this for 5 to 7 days and take it before eating your meals. You can even do a cold compress with it to help relieve pain, headaches and other discomforts.

Mix one part of ACV with two parts of cool water; soak a clean cloth in it and squeeze out excess water, place this on your forehead or abdomen or the part you feel pain for sometimes. When it becomes warm; place it in the water and repeat this whole process till you regain yourself.

  1. Holy basil

The leaves of basil are effective cures for typhoid fever; they have antibiotic and antibacterial compounds that expel salmonella from the body, they bring down high body temperature, relieve the symptoms of typhoid, calm stomach disturbances and boost the immune system.

Make basil tea by boiling fresh basil leaves some cups of water; add crushed ginger root and boil this mixture until the water reduces by half. Let it cool, strain it and add honey for taste. Take this thrice daily.

  1. Cloves

Both cloves and clove essential oil are powerful remedies for typhoid fever; they have strong antibacterial properties which can kill salmonella typhi, the microbe that causes typhoid.

They also reduce the symptoms and severity of typhoid; they stop vomiting and diarrhea and increase the energy of the body. Boil some clove buds in 8 cups of water and let it boil till the solution reduces to half.

Strain it and allow it to cool, then take this solution throughout the day; do this for at least 7 days and you will see great improvement.

  1. Honey

Typhoid fever affects the digestive system; it causes stomach aches and digestive problems, honey helps in soothing the digestive system and relieving this pains and discomforts. It energizes the body; relieves stomach aches and hastens recovery.

Take two tablespoons of honey twice daily; in the morning and at night when going to bed.

  1. Buttermilk

This is an effective home remedy for typhoid fever; it boosts the immune system, fights dehydration and improves the functions of the digestive system thereby preventing digestive problems.

Take 3 cups of buttermilk daily; you can add coriander leave extract to make it more effective. You can also take it with banana.

  1. Ginger and lemon tea

This combination supplies the body with powerful nutrients to help it overcome this disease; lemons are a great source of vitamin C and this vitamin boosts the immune system. Take lots of ginger and lemon tea.

  1. Lime water and orange juice
