Images are some of the most important aspect of our blog posts. Sometimes, they convey messages more powerful even than the post itself. It is therefore very important to optimize our images to ensure optimum performance on the search engines.

It is importance to note that bulk of your site’s search engine traffics could come from the image search if you take time to optimize these images before publishing. Now, how do you optimize the images in your blog post?

Steps To Optimize Images In Blog Posts

1. Chose Appropriate Images – Like it is said, picture is worth more than a thousand words, but not all pictures worth that much. Choosing the appropriate images for your blog post is important in many ways.

It increases Click Through Rate (CTR) when the related keyword phrase is used to search for images in Google or any other search engine.

Example: If I’m searching for “adorable cats” and in your blog post, you’ve used high resolution pictures of  an adorable cat that stands out, I may be more likely to click on the image which may lead me to your site or blog.

2. Name Your Images Appropriately – Having captured the image of an adorable cat I want to use for my blog post, It is important to save it on my hard drive with the keyword “Adorable Cat” before uploading.

This will help the machine to recognize your picture as containing the image of an adorable cat.

3. Tag Your Images Properly – The basic proper tagging includes: ‘ALT Tag’ and ‘Image Title’ advance optimizations includes image description, alternative description, and image caption.

These are very essential because those are what the search engine may rely upon to interpret your image content. The better you are at it, the easier it will be for the search engine to recognize your images and assign priority to it.

4. Use Appropriate Size – The bigger the file size, the heavier it is. When an image in a blog post is too heavy, it will increase the amount of time the page used to load. That may scare search engine and human traffic away from your blog because they may not want to wait for eternity for your page to load.

Smaller images helps for faster page load and overall performance on search engine as well as users experience.

5. Avoid Too Many Images –  Even when you used smaller images in numbers, they will still add up and make for heavy page load.

One or two light weight pictures with file size of less than 20kb may just be what you need for a blog post to convey your messages and at the same time rank on search engine.
